The Friar's Lantern - Greg Hickey
Book Synopsis: You may win $1,000,000. You will judge a man of murder.
An eccentric scientist tells you he can read your mind and offers to prove it in a high-stakes wager. A respected college professor exacts impassioned, heat-of-the-moment revenge on his wife’s killer—a week after her death—and you’re on the jury. Take a Turing test with a twist, discover how your future choices might influence the past, and try your luck at Three Card Monte. And while you weigh chance, superstition, destiny, intuition and logic in making your decisions, ask yourself: are you responsible for your actions at all? Choose wisely—if you can.
Disclaimer: All of my opinions are unbiased and my own honest thoughts while reading.
One memory from my childhood that I still vividly remember is reading choose-your-own-adventure books over and over again. Each time I was able to choose a different pathway, take new twists and turns, or if I failed or didn't get the ending I wanted, I was able to re-read until I was satisfied. That's what I love about this genre: you are in control, you decide what happens.
Immediately upon reading I was immersed into this world, there was so much detail that the story came to life and was easy to imagine. I put myself in the main character's shoes which made the experience more personal and exciting - I did get the ending I wanted on the first try! I would and could read this book repeatedly just to see all the possibilities and outcomes. A moment in this book when I knew I was hooked was when the main character was given two choices, and I knew that I had to keep reading to progress the journey.
There are currently two books in this series, book one is The Friar's Lantern, and the prequel to this book is called The Theory of Anything.
If you are someone who is not much of a reader or if you happen to love making choices, you would definitely enjoy this book - it doesn't get boring. Every turn of the page is a surprise, and I highly recommend taking a chance with this choose-your-own-adventure book! You'll never know where this adventure will take you.
