I Believe In A Thing Called Love - Maurene Goo
Book Synopsis: Desi Lee believes anything is possible if you have a plan. That’s how she became student body president. Varsity soccer star. And it’s how she’ll get into Stanford. But—she’s never had a boyfriend. In fact, she’s a disaster in romance, a clumsy, stammering humiliation magnet whose botched attempts at flirting have become legendary with her friends. So when the hottest human specimen to have ever lived walks into her life one day, Desi decides to tackle her flirting failures with the same zest she’s applied to everything else in her life. She finds guidance in the Korean dramas her father has been obsessively watching for years—where the hapless heroine always seems to end up in the arms of her true love by episode ten. It’s a simple formula, and Desi is a quick study. Armed with her “K Drama Steps to True Love,” Desi goes after the moody, elusive artist Luca Drakos—and boat rescues, love triangles, and staged car crashes ensue. But when the fun and games turn to true feels, Desi finds out that real love is about way more than just drama.
I read this book last year in ebook format from the app Libby while on vacation in Florida, and I can't believe that I've never reviewed it before.
This novel is the perfect beach read or Spring/Summer read. How beautiful is the cover?
Desi Lee is the main character and she is hilarious, yes, she is a little entitled, and yes she is determined to get her way.
However, despite all of those characteristics she possesses, I found her so funny, I adored her and the journey she goes on to apply Korean dramas to her love life. My favorite character other than Desi is probably her dad, he is so relatable.
Coming from an Asian family myself, I found myself cracking up and pausing every time I read a sentence or passage that I myself have been guilty of doing.
I'm a list maker like Desi, and I love watching Asian dramas, but the aspect of Desi that I found myself most drawn to was her spirit.
Desi Lee has a type-A personality, no doubt about it, and I'm known to have the same kind of go-getter attitude that Desi has. My only caveat about this book is the fact that Desi tried too hard. When things went wrong for her, I think that it could have been handled differently, but other than that, I can't complain!
Even though I read this book a year ago, the story stayed fresh in my mind and quickly became a favorite of Maurene Goo's writing for me.
Currently, I am reading Somewhere Only We Know and I am loving every moment.
Honestly, I hope that Maurene Goo continues to write books in this universe, I've read all of her books and I can't wait to see what she has in store for readers next!
