Foolish Hearts - Emma Mills

A contemporary novel about a girl whose high school production of A Midsummer Night's Dream leads her to new friends—and maybe even new love.

Book Synopsis: The day of the last party of the summer, Claudia overhears a conversation she wasn't supposed to. Now on the wrong side of one of the meanest girls in school, Claudia doesn't know what to expect when the two are paired up to write a paper—let alone when they're both forced to try out for the school production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. But mandatory participation has its upsides—namely, an unexpected friendship, a boy band obsession, and a guy with the best dimpled smile Claudia's ever seen. As Claudia's world starts to expand, she finds that maybe there are some things worth sticking her neck out for.

This is the third book that I've ever read by Emma Mills.

I'll have to be honest here, I didn't think that I was going to like this book at all, but I did end up liking it.

The cover is beautiful, I read the hardcover edition and the title feels like stitching and the cover itself is etched with a random pattern of purplish pinkish foil that is stunning. (Also, the book that I happened to borrow smells like perfume or some cologne, I'm not sure if all editions smell like that or if the person who borrowed it before me sprayed the book with something, not that I'm complaining.)

Claudia is the main character and when she overhears an explosive breakup she now has a target on her back and is forced to try out for the school production and write a paper with said mean girl. Yes, I did just summarize and condense the synopsis.

What I loved about this book: the cover as I have mentioned, the cast of characters, and just how funny and quirky it was as a whole, but it is still not exactly a five star read for me and this is why...

Which is what brings us to this: what I didn't like about this book... Iris (resident mean person) only at first, then I grew to like her and Claudia's selfish brother Alex which I also grew to like somewhat. Why is he selfish, well you'll just have to read the book to find out.

Usually, I tend to love whatever Emma Mills writes, however, her most recent book of 2019 titled Famous In A Small Town has had some mixed reviews (that I feel a disappointed about.)

I'm going into the book pretty blank for the most part, I am a bit swayed by the negative reviews, but I will read and review it on this blog anyway.

Rating: ★★★★☆ 4/5 Stars
