Reflection (Twisted Tales #4) - Elizabeth Lim

Book Synopsis: What if Mulan had to travel to the Underworld?

When Captain Shang is mortally wounded by Shan Yu in battle, Mulan must travel to the Underworld, Diyu, in order to save him from certain death. But King Yama, the ruler of Diyu, is not willing to give Shang up easily. With the help of Shang's great lion guardian ShiShi, Mulan must traverse Diyu to find Shang's spirit, face harrowing obstacles, and leave by sunrise--or become King Yama's prisoner forever. Moreover, Mulan is still disguised as the soldier called Ping, wrestling with the decision to reveal her true identity to her closest friend. Will Mulan be able to save Shang before it's too late? Will he ever be able to trust her again? Or will she lose him--and be lost in the Underworld--forever?

Ok. I have read all the books in this series so far, I'm not sure if they are coming out with newer books to add to it, but I think that I have reviewed almost all of the twisted tales, if not all of them.

I just adore fairytale retellings, especially if they happen to be Disney. Mulan is one of my favorite Disney movies and even though she is not a princess, I still dressed up like her for Halloween when I was a small kid. Though I do not have the dress anymore, I do have the memories and pictures.

For privacy reasons, I will not be posting the picture, but I will be including some GIFs. so stay tuned for that...

Yes, that GIF is from the scene with the song "reflection". Who is going to be watching the live action movie coming out soon?

I definitely 100% am watching it.

Yes, I am Asian and I still love Mulan! Fingers crossed that the movie will be amazing!

That GIF is strange, but I think it sort of fits.

Back to the review, so what if Mulan had to go to the Underworld... what would happen. If you've ever asked yourself that, go on and read this book, it answers it beautifully. Imagery and the words alone and if the cover cannot convince you to read the book, then boy you are stubborn.

What I loved about the book: Mulan obviously, but other than her, I would have to say that it felt like sitting down and seeing a movie, it was THAT good.

I'll admit that I did have my reservations about reading this book. Some thoughts that ran through my head: will I like this, why oh why did they do a book like this, and OH, it is fantastic.

So the question remains, why did I only give this book less than five stars?

Well, you'll have to find out by reading it, I'm just messing, I'll tell you... I am a firm believer that things like Mulan should under NO circumstances EVER be turned into a book, unless it is word for word like the animated movie. However, this book made me rethink my bias.

Go and read this book, yes, it wasn't a five star read for me, but I think you'll enjoy it as much or even more than I did.

Anxiously awaiting the next book in this series and the next one is sure to be one of my favorites.

Rating: ★★★★☆ 4/5 Stars
