Since You Asked - Maurene Goo
Book Synopsis: A humorous, debut novel about a Korean-American teenager who accidentally lands her own column in her high school newspaper, and proceeds to rant her way through the school year while struggling to reconcile the traditional Korean values of her parents with contemporary American culture.
Holly Kim. Super annoying teenage girl with no respect for herself, her family, and others. Honestly, I wanted to quit reading this book about halfway through, but I am not a quitter. The reason that I wanted to stick with this was because I do enjoy Maurene Goo as an author.
Side note: the cover on the hardback book I read had an image of an Asian girl that looked the way I did in high school, except I had longer hair than Holly Kim does.
Back to the review, what I couldn't stand about this book.
This was Maurene Goo's debut YA novel, and it did get a lot of negative reviews. But I am not here to entirely bash it, just share my thoughts and feelings that I had while reading this book.
Other than the obvious and painful fact that Holly is annoying, her friends are the same as she is. If not worse. I was a teenager not too long ago, but I definitely wasn't as disrespectful and ungrateful as Holly and her friends are.
