A Monster Calls - Patrick Ness

Book Synopsis:The bestselling novel about love, loss and hope from the twice Carnegie Medal-winning Patrick Ness.

Conor has the same dream every night, ever since his mother first fell ill, ever since she started the treatments that don't quite seem to be working. But tonight is different. Tonight, when he wakes, there's a visitor at his window. It's ancient, elemental, a force of nature. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor. It wants the truth. Patrick Ness takes the final idea of the late, award-winning writer Siobhan Dowd and weaves an extraordinary and heartbreaking tale of mischief, healing and above all, the courage it takes to survive.

I saw the movie before reading the book. Cardinal sin, I realize, but I didn't know that I would one day actually read the novel.

This version that I read was illustrated and it just brought the story to life.

Everything popped, I think that books are about twice as good when they include illustrations.

It was as heartbreaking as the movie. I was a fan of the movie, but the book in my humble opinion is even better.

My favorite aspect of the book other than the pictures were the short stories or tales that the monster told to Conor. This is one of the most unique novels that I have ever read. And I love the fact that its a story of not just a yew tree telling stories, but of what the truth really means and how important your truth is.
