Book Synopsis: An extraordinary new novel from the author of Never Let Me Go and the Booker Prize-winning The Remains of the Day. "You've long set your heart against it, Axl, I know. But it's time now to think on it anew. There's a journey we must go on, and no more delay..." The Romans have long since departed, and Britain is steadily declining into ruin. But at least the wars that once ravaged the country have ceased. The Buried Giant begins as a couple, Axl and Beatrice, set off across a troubled land of mist and rain in the hope of finding a son they have not seen for years. They expect to face many hazards — some strange and other-worldly — but they cannot yet foresee how their journey will reveal to them dark and forgotten corners of their love for one another. Sometimes savage, often intensely moving, Kazuo Ishiguro's first novel in a decade is about lost memories, love, revenge and war.
Originally I had planned to just listen to this book on Overdrive, but I quickly found that being on a plane for six hours, the sound just wasn't going to cut it.
So, I went to the library and borrowed the book a few weeks after.
Why a few weeks? Well, I have a huge pile of books on my TBR list, and since 1,000+ books aren't going to magically read themselves. Quite a feat, but I plan to conquer it one of these days... slowly I'm making my way through the shelf at a glacial pace.
When I finally picked up my copy of the book, it was just gorgeous, the book has black pages on the edges and the pages themselves are white. Plus, I needed to have a physical copy just so I could get the spelling of the names right when writing my review.
I highly recommend you listen to the audiobook as well as reading the hardback/paperback because the narrator's voice is just so smooth like velvet.
Axl and Beatrice's story kind of creeped me out, not going to lie, but it was interesting to see how the author was able to weave their story into something bigger. This is the first novel that I've read by this author and I'm looking forward to reading his other books.
