This Shattered World (Starbound # 2) - Amie Kaufman | Meagan Spooner

Book Synopsis: The second installment in the epic Starbound trilogy introduces a new pair of star-crossed lovers on two sides of a bloody war. Jubilee Chase and Flynn Cormac should never have met. Lee is captain of the forces sent to Avon to crush the terraformed planet's rebellious colonists, but she has her own reasons for hating the insurgents. Rebellion is in Flynn's blood. Terraforming corporations make their fortune by recruiting colonists to make the inhospitable planets livable, with the promise of a better life for their children. But they never fulfilled their promise on Avon, and decades later, Flynn is leading the rebellion. Desperate for any advantage in a bloody and unrelentingly war, Flynn does the only thing that makes sense when he and Lee cross paths: he returns to base with her as prisoner. But as his fellow rebels prepare to execute this tough-talking girl with nerves of steel, Flynn makes another choice that will change him forever. He and Lee escape the rebel base together, caught between two sides of a senseless war.

In the beginning, I was thrilled to be finally reading the second book in the Starbound Trilogy. Honestly, I really wanted to like the sequel. Of course, as fate would have it... it wasn't written in the stars that I would even come close to liking it.

And here's a big reason why: Jubilee Chase and Flynn Cormac - their relationship is out of this world, pun intended. It's almost like Juliet and Romeo, just without the Shakespearean vibe and without the needless deaths (sort of).

This book's saving grace was that there is a brief cameo of Tarver Merendsen and Lilac LaRoux, but that's about all I can divulge.

Overall, I was really disappointed with this book. My high hopes were crushed and gently scattered across the universe. I have no choice but to continue reading the trilogy, because I seriously will not rest until I have completed all the novels in this series.

Rating: ★★★☆☆

(In other words, not as good as the first one, but good enough to get an okay rating.)
